5 Underestimated Medium Features

Medium Tips

How to give your story the final polish

When it comes to writing successfully on Medium, nothing beats good quality. No formatting or marketing can replace a well-written story providing value and insights for the reader.

Nevertheless, the Medium editor has some built-in features to give your story the last polish. They will add up to your great writing to optimize the experience for the reader. In the following, I will present 5 features I use every time I prepare a story for publishing.

Improving formatting with the Three Dots

A very much underestimated formatting tool is the Three Dots. Start a new section with the Plus-Button and click on the item on the right end. It will insert three centered dots and a line break.

I like this feature because even without an intermediate heading, it divides one idea or argument from the next one. It also adds some beautiful white space to the story. Your readers using the Medium app on their smartphone screen will thank you!

Use the Kicker

The Kicker is part of the editor’s built-in headline structure. Do you already know how to set up a title and a sub-title using the big T-icon and the small one respectively? Great!

Now insert a line over your main headline and format it as a small title with the small T-icon. The editor will translate it into a Kicker appearing shaded on top of your main title. You can use it for categorization or highlighting a specific story tag.

I do like this feature because it adds another layer of structure to your story. Your reader is guided from the main topic in the Kicker over to your main title and then to the subtitle. By then, he has an excellent idea of what to expect from your story.

Defining SEO title and description

While working on your draft in the editor, you can click the settings button next to the green Publish-Button. Hit the More Settings section and scroll down until you find SEO Settings.
