Of Books and Nostalgia

The feeling of picking up a book after years is incomparable. So is the joy that the fragile, aging paper evokes. Knowing you can go right back to where you left off, as if you had never left in the…

What is your art background? How did you get into art?
I am a graphic designer and illustrator. I’ve been drawing since I was a child. I remember being fascinated by colours, and used to draw on any surface, much to my mother’s dismay. In school, art classes made me feel the most at home and I truly enjoyed being good at it. I knew I wanted to do take up a field where “I could draw” and that’s how I came across design. I studied Communication Design at Indian School of Design and Innovation, Mumbai.

Tell us about your unique style of art & storytelling. How did this evolve?
I like to believe that I should be able to draw anything and everything so as to best express the story. My work and the way I draw changes according to the mediums and materials that I’m experimenting with and I don’t think I have a particular style evolved just yet. It was actually in my second year of college that I became conscious of how much I enjoyed telling stories through illustrations. It was a book with black and white line illustrations and it influenced my later work greatly. However, I also work with watercolors, gauche and have recently started using crayons again.

What motivates you to make art the way you do?
I usually work in breaks and I draw a lot when I feel inspired by some other pieces of art that I have come across like a beautifully shot film, scenes from a book that I can visualize or music. A lot of my personal work is driven by emotions and thoughts that I want to express through drawings that I am unable to express in words.

Give us a glimpse into your drawing practice?
How do you make time for it?

As much as I would like to say that I draw everyday, I still haven’t put that routine down. However I usually draw late into the night, listening to either music or a podcast. That is the time when I am fully able to concentrate and immerse myself into the work that I am creating.

What do you love about drawing the most? What do you find
the most challenging?

Drawing has been a tool of communication, providing me with a sense of creation and self-validation. However, the challenge that I face when creating art are the expectations I put on myself when I’m inevitably comparing my work to others.

How did The Churgle Club help you in developing your art and learning? Churgle Club was an immensely fulfilling experience. Through those four months I was able to learn so much about myself and my drawing skills. The workbooks for each month gave me a structure and motivation to draw everyday and overcome my own misgivings about my drawing capabilities.
I also learned a lot from the community that we created with the Club. Everyone gave valuable feedback and it was great learning with a diverse set of people.

Do you have any advice for someone who is a beginner to drawing, and hasn’t been able to make a start yet?
I think the only way to get drawing is to let go of the fear and just start. Chances are you’re not going to be great at it in the beginning but it will most definitely get better with time. And of course sign up for the Churgle Club!

What are your plans for the year ahead? Where do you hope to take your art practice?
I’m planning for further studies in illustration while working side-by-side in the publishing industry as an illustrator and graphic designer.
