Kaiser Permanente Needs to Step Up Its Mental Health Care

Kaiser, wake up and do better!

Kaiser Permanente is one of the biggest health industries in California, insuring and providing care to more than 9 million Californians. However, an article by Fact Company looking into Kaiser’s mental health industry exposed the flaws in Kaiser’s mental health care.

For some context, Kaiser covers health care for eight states, including Wahington D.C. Kaiser is very popular in California. What makes Kaiser so unique to other health care insurances is that they do the job of both the insurance and health care provider.

Meaning that people under Kaiser can only go to Kaiser to be covered for their care. However, what do you do when you can’t get it? Or when it takes too long to get mental health care? Any other option would be entirely out of pocket, but any chance with Kaiser could take months to obtain or may not match your mental health needs.

As someone with Kaiser, my experience getting a therapist has been highly unsuccessful. It was difficult to contact my doctor about reaching a therapist; once I contacted the doctor, she suggested that getting anti-depressants might be easier since it would take me at least six weeks to talk with a therapist. Additionally, it seemed like once I was able to speak to a therapist, it would be a kind of “get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit” type of situation, compared to taking the time to find a therapist I could establish a good therapeutic relationship with.

I am lucky that I am a grad student studying to be a therapist because it allowed me to have access to other resources, but it made me think about others who aren’t and need mental health care.
