How I Learnt To Code

I was working as a Facility Manager in a luxurious real estate firm in Ikoyi, Lagos, where I was charged with the responsibility of taking care of the day-to-day maintenance of buildings and ensuring that the services I and my team renders meet the needs of the people that live in them.

Despite earning a pretty cool cash as salary, I just wasn’t satisfied with my job and was getting really frustrated every other day, because I felt my job was not helping to develop my technical abilities and allowing me to solve big enough problems.

I constantly spoke to my friends about how much I was not satisfied with my job at every opportunity I got. Until one fateful day, when I heard about software development. I was curious about it and thought that it might just be the answer to my prayers.

My journey into the world of software development was about to begin, but I did not have a laptop and did not even know where to start from. Luckily for me, Andela Learning Community 2.0 was about to begin and I had some savings to get a fairly used UK Laptop.

I chose the Android development path. Yea, almost everyone has an Android phone and I thought it would be a good opportunity to create an application that could be used by everyone to solve a particular problem.

The journey was tough, very tough, but I was determined to make it to the end. This zeal of mine would then go on to cause me so many sleepless nights, lots of gigabytes of data (Oh, how can I forget the frustrations that came with downloading and installing Android studio). I remember going to work on Saturdays and Sundays (for power supply) and lodging in a hotel just to have some coding time and free myself of the distractions at home and in the office.

After much efforts, I succeeded in completing all tasks and assignments, and I was awarded a certificate of completion in Android development.

When ALC 3.0 came up, I went on to participate, and this time, I decided to join the Front End development path. Like ALC 2.0, I had to combine the program with my normal job. And in the end, I was successful too.

I will continuously keep my passion alive and work hard to become a world-class software developer some day.
