Simple Tips for a Better Sleep

So simple, you might ignore them!

I remember reading some early research on scientists studying insomniacs. In one innovative model, a scientist hypothesised that the main challenge for many people was that their bodies had forgotten how to fall asleep, and so he set about retraining his subjects.

The experiment worked like this:
The subject staying in an enclosed sleep booth, could stay awake as long as they liked until they felt like falling asleep.
The minute the monitoring data said they had fallen asleep, they were awoken.
For most subjects, that meant they were well awake again. Until they fell asleep. And guess what?
They were immediately woken up.

Repeat…

The end result was that the subjects, all long standing insomniacs or those with significant difficulties getting to sleep, learned to do so.

These steps are a little basic by comparison but they work for me and I hope will do so for you also.

Ditch The ‘Fake Awake’ Mindset

I used to look at my watch, see it was say ‘2am’. Later I’d check it again and it’d be 3am and in my mind I’d say ‘gaaawd I’ve been awake for an hour’. Or two hours or three hours.

But the reality for me (and likely you) is that in between time check 1 and time check 2 (3, 4 and 5), you’ve been asleep. So ditch the fake awake mindset. Now when I wake up and check the time (which is MUCH rarer) I calculate in my head HOW MUCH LONGER I am going to sleep for. So if I am getting up at 6.15am and the time is 1.30am I say to myself — ‘great, about another five hours’ and I roll over and close my eyes.

Fake Awake is a mindset — ditch it and watch your sense of rest improve.

When Nights Out, It’s Lights Out

Although for everyone, this idea applies especially for men. In the middle of the night if you have to go to the bathroom, DO NOT EVER turn on a light. Instead edge your way to the bathroom and SIT DOWN to go.

There’s usually more than enough light to see, especially if you have ANY electronic product near by — it’s going to have an LED light that your eyes will be able to see with.
