The power of sharing experiences

About a year ago I made the choice to be vulnerable publicly about infertility, which in my culture is very uncommon. Despite being extremely nervous about sharing such intimate parts of myself, thinking back now I was glad I did.

I was empowered by my vulnerability, it was such a profound feeling. During this time I connected with all types of women globally, who opened up about their individual journeys, how they have felt and their treatment experiences. It pushed me to speak up and freely in a culture like many others that tries to cage our emotions. Before I took the leap to publish my writing I was anxious about the reaction from everyone, but I was overwhelmed with the positive response. I had no idea that there were so many women who also had pcos, some I knew personally and others I only communicated with through social media. It was then that I realised how common it was and how differently it affected each of these women.

Coming from cultures that put such importance on having children, most of the women expressed their frustration with noisy people constantly asking them about having children. For the woman going through this situation the comments/questions are unnecessary and rude. However most people either unintentionally cross boundaries or assume a simple question could not have such an impact.

Hearing all these stories just reinforced to me that sharing personal experiences can be very powerful. Many people have taken to social platforms to share stories and honestly it has been instrumental in breaking the silence when it comes to taboo topics. Sharing personal journeys allows us all the opportunity to better understand each other, it provides room for empathy and growth.

In the end we are all humans, covered in invisible tattoos that map out our journeys.
