Day Eleven

I usually write these at the end of the day so I get every part of my thoughts and feelings down. In doing so a lot of emotions have impacted upon my day. First of all the weather really did not want me to go out, it was lashing down and the wind battered my window. I waited as long as I could and stepped out with my running lamp into a damp and cold night. The light drizzle was highlighted by the strong beam emanating from my chest like a poor mans Iron Man.

My plan originally was to repeat the 4 mile route of yesterday and see how my pace was compared to yesterday. However today there is something much more important in the UK a General Election, my usual 2 mile route would take me past the polling station, with the weather the worry was a drop in turnout and I wanted to see for myself.

I would have felt rather useless if I had only managed 2 miles that’s my sprint hill route when it is warmer so tacked on to make it 6 miles. My pace was consistent as I listen to one of my favourite podcasts until around mile four and I felt a familiar warmth and pain in the arch of my left foot, a blister. My right foot soon followed suit. Still I finished the route and was happy with managing to focus myself enough to go out in the cold and the wet.

This is the first time I have developed a blister with my trusty Injinji toe socks, which is a little worrying and will require treatment and management over the next couple of days. Still I ran back with a little bit of hope in my mind.

That hope as I sit here and type with what is left of a bottle of gin has now completely gone. This general election has shifted in a worrying way, often our media bubble shows us what we want. I am fortunate enough to have gone to university, well a few universities. My circle of friends is progressive and many from my city of birth Liverpool. I honestly felt this was a moment of change from all I was seeing.

My first degree was in Politics and Economics, and although I do not proclaim to be an expert like some I see my understanding is relatively strong on the topics. I was once told by a junior doctor that she did not care about economics or politics, my glib response was that without them she would not be a doctor. Now as the results come in I wonder how that person feels, then again I know how the NHS was founded and the fight to create it against certain parties.

I will however wake up, no doubt slightly hungover I will put on my running gear and keep training to help a great charity in VICTA. I will be going out and buying products to donate to a foodbank on Saturday to help someone else. In the USA when the results went in a racist and worrying way they said they would resist. My words and feeling, maybe is always in that mindset because I am from a city decimated by governments who cared little for us, but has a new overriding feeling, help each other. When you see injustice and corruption fight it, when you can help someone else do it. That is the only way we can continue on.

My donation page for VICTA:

If you would like to donate to a foodbank with all the ease of text here are some details:

Simply text FOODBANKFC to 70460 — donations will cost £5, plus your standard network message rate. Alternatively, you can donate any whole amount up to £20 by texting FOODBANKFC, plus the value. For example, FOODBANKFC10 to 70460 means you’ll be donating £10.
