Influencer Marketing and me

What’s all this then?

(this post 1st appeared on my LinkedIn a month or so ago)

4–5 years ago, I’d never heard of influencer marketing.

I came from a social media and marketing background, where I added to my established duties by creating an affiliate #blogging network. The idea was to build-out the voices on our channels that spoke with some authority regarding travel and all the nuisances that come with it.

Other than re-allocating the blog writing task to experienced travellers (I love to write, btw), I sought to include insightful voices — more insightful than a frustrated traveller, stuck in an office, writing about his five-year-old journeys.

I realised that I was offering an opportunity for up-and-coming Bloggers, Instagrammers and Pinterest-ers to tell their stories and get attention to their channels too.

Myself and my director ran a two-person marketing team, this meant that I was lucky enough to have near-free reign on the type of content I delivered and how we could expand our voice.

I looked at what we had, how we used those channels and then took a stab at making a difference.

Our social grew, our blog network grew, we were nominated for our first marketing awards — ever, in both the blogging and social categories. We tried something different and that hard work continues to pay dividends even today.

I moved-on (marketers do that) and fell into influencer marketing — creative writers often fall into copywriting and marketing. The thing is, although I found myself a couple of months into my new role and wondering what the hell I was doing, after I’d taught myself the basics, the thrill took over!

It’s odd to call marketing ‘thrilling’, but for those of us in the Influencer Marketing game, it’s apt.

There’s something different every day I walk into our office. There’s a new client, a new campaign, a new cake (thanks to our in-house baker) and a new challenge.

I could do with a little more consistency (Social channels — you know who you are), but other than that, it’s the youth of the discipline that keeps me fascinated and had you asked me when I finished studying writing, where I’d end-up, marketing would not likely have been at the top of my list, but now… now I live for this stuff!

So, should you fancy a career in #influencermarketing, we’re here, we’re MG Empower and we’re making all kinds of strides…just ask and we’ll show you.
