The shift lever of an automatic transmission is made up of two parts, a wedge-shaped lower end 82a, and a spring 90. Both of these parts are used to push the ball of the shift lever into a bearing, which in turn pushes the spring against the small tapered bushing of the automatic transmission.

A selector lever 10 is located on the car’s body and engages with a position plate 18. Position plate 18 has a profiled opening 18a that is used to place the lever in different gear positions.

When the lever is in the “P” position, the profiled opening 18a is engaged with the position pin 20. In this configuration, the position pin 20 clears the stopper portion 18b of the profiled opening 18a.
